Alright, so I gave this ‘blackball nyt’ thing a shot the other day. Heard some chatter about it, figured I’d see what the fuss was about. Wasn’t really sure what to expect, just another puzzle game, I guess.

Fired it up. Looked simple enough at first glance. Just a grid, some colored balls, and one black ball. The name kinda gives it away, right? You probably gotta get rid of everything but the black ball. Seemed straightforward.
Getting Started
So, I just started tapping around. Tapped a colored ball next to the black one. Poof, it disappeared, along with any other balls of the same color connected to it. Okay, makes sense. Felt a bit like those matching games.
My first few attempts were pretty clumsy. I just clicked whatever groups looked biggest. Cleared a bunch of balls fast, felt good for a second. But then I’d end up with scattered single balls, or colors trapped away from the black ball. Couldn’t make any more moves. Game over. Reset.
This happened a few times. I realized just clicking big groups wasn’t the way. It’s easy to clear chunks, but you paint yourself into a corner real fast.
Figuring it Out (Slowly)
I started slowing down. Instead of just clearing, I tried to think about which group to clear. Does clearing this blue group help me get the black ball next to that tricky red group later? That kind of thing.

It started feeling more like strategy, less like random clicking. Here’s what I found worked better:
- Look ahead. Don’t just see the easy move, see what the board looks like after the move.
- Try to keep the black ball sort of central, if possible, so it can reach different color groups.
- Sometimes clearing a smaller group was actually the better move if it set up a bigger clear later or connected the black ball to an isolated group.
- Pay attention to those single, isolated balls. Gotta plan how the black ball is gonna get next to them eventually.
There were still plenty of fails. Sometimes you just make a wrong move and see it immediately after. Too late then. Or you get down to two colors left, and the black ball can only touch one. Argh. Have to reset again.
The Payoff
Finally, after maybe 20 minutes of trying and resetting, I cleared one. Got rid of all the colored balls, just the single black ball left sitting there. Honestly, felt pretty satisfying. It wasn’t super complex, but it required a bit more thought than I first expected.
Played a few more rounds after that. Sometimes I cleared it quickly, other times I got stuck again. It really depends on the starting layout and the choices you make early on.
So yeah, that was my little adventure with the NYT Blackball puzzle. It’s a decent little time-waster. Simple rules, but you need some planning to actually win consistently. Not bad for a quick brain exercise.
