Okay, so today, March 16th, I decided to dive into something I’ve been putting off – trying to understand a bit more about autism practically. I’m no expert, just a regular guy trying to learn.

First, I grabbed my notebook and pen. I like to keep things old school sometimes. Digital is great, but there’s something about physically writing things down that helps me process.
Getting Started
I started by just jotting down what I thought I knew about autism. You know, the basic stuff you hear about. Turns out, a lot of it was pretty vague and, honestly, probably a bit stereotypical.
- Difficulty with social stuff? Check.
- Repetitive behaviors? Check.
- Being good and focused on one single thing? Check.
Pretty shallow, right? I realized I needed to go deeper.
Digging Deeper
So, I spent a good chunk of the day watching some videos, mainly first-hand accounts from autistic people. I figure it’s always best to hear directly from the source, right? No filters, just real experiences.
I watched some videos and took notes. I wrote down key phrases, things that stood out to me, and stuff I wanted to look into further. My notebook started filling up pretty quickly. It was a bit of an information overload, to be honest, but in a good way.

I also tried to find some reliable online resources, things like articles from reputable organizations. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so I was careful to stick with sources that seemed legit. For example, I found some articles from organizations which seemed pretty unbiased.
What I (Think) I Learned
It is still very fresh, but I do think i have a bit more knowledge about autism after today’s work.
- It is a huge spectrum! What affects one person might be totally different for another.
- Sensory sensitivities can be a big deal. Things like bright lights or loud noises can be really overwhelming for some.
- It’s not something to be “cured.” It’s just a different way of experiencing the world.
I ended the day feeling like I’d only scratched the surface, but it was a good start. It’s definitely something I want to keep learning about. I think it is really important to challenge my own assumptions and try to understand different perspectives.
I definitely have lots of blank spaces in my notes and mind, going to continue doing it, I think it will be great.
