Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this here Irish Open golf thing. It’s been goin’ on for a good long while, started way back in 1927, they say. That’s a lot of golfin’, I reckon. Irish Open Winners, that’s what they call ’em, the fellas who done won it all.
Now, I ain’t no fancy golf expert, but I know a winner when I see one. They hit that little white ball real far and get it in that hole, fewer times than the other fellas. Sounds simple enough, but I hear it ain’t. Lots of these fellas come from all over, not just Ireland, though the Irish lads, they sure do like to win it on their home turf.
This year, 2024, some young fella named Rasmus Hojgaard, he won it. Played over there at Royal County Down, they say it’s a real nice course. Last year, it was Vincent Norman, and the year before that, Adrian Meronk. See, they change winners every year, just like the seasons. Keeps it interestin’, I guess.
They play this tournament at all sorts of fancy places. Places with names like The K Club, Mount Juliet, and even over at St. Andrews in Scotland once in a while, though mostly it’s in Ireland, ya know, bein’ the Irish Open and all. Some of these courses, they got rules, like you gotta be a pretty good golfer to even play on ’em. They talk about somethin’ called a “handicap,” but I don’t rightly understand it. Sounds like somethin’ for them rich folks.

- 2023 Winner: Vincent Norman
- 2022 Winner: Adrian Meronk
They say the best time to go watch or play golf in Ireland is from May to September. The weather’s nicer then, I suppose. Not too cold and not too rainy. Though, Ireland bein’ Ireland, you can always count on a bit of rain, I reckon. But these golfers, they don’t seem to mind it much. They just keep on hittin’ that ball.
There’s been a whole bunch of winners over the years, too many to remember, let me tell ya. They keep track of ’em all, though. You can probably find a list somewhere if you’re interested. I heard tell of some famous Irish champions who even won somethin’ called The Open Championship, that’s a real big deal, even bigger than the Irish Open, I think. A fella named Fred Daly, he won it one time.
And it ain’t just the fellas playin’ either. They got these amateur championships too, and the ladies playin’ golf just as good as the men sometimes. They got courses all over Ireland, some real famous ones, and they hold big dinners and give out awards. It’s a whole to-do.
Now, some folks say you need a special certificate to play golf in Ireland, but I hear you don’t really need one, ‘cept for maybe some of them super fancy courses. So, if you’re ever over there and feel like hittin’ a few balls, you can probably just go ahead and do it. Just don’t expect to be winnin’ no Irish Open anytime soon, unless you’re one of them real good players.
This here Irish Open, it’s a big thing, you see. Brings lots of folks together, and it’s good for the country, I hear. Golf in Ireland is a big deal, they got the courses and they got the players, and they sure do like to watch ‘em play. And every year, they crown a new winner, another name to add to the list.
So, there you have it, a little somethin’ about the Irish Open winners and all that golf stuff. It ain’t rocket science, but it’s somethin’ folks seem to enjoy. And as long as they keep hittin’ that little white ball, I reckon they’ll keep havin’ these tournaments.
Golf tournaments like this one, they bring in lots of money too. Folks comin’ to watch, stayin’ in hotels, eatin’ in restaurants. It’s good for the local businesses, see? So, it ain’t just about hittin’ a ball, it’s about the whole shebang. The whole community gettin’ together.
And that’s about all I got to say about that. If you wanna know more, you’ll have to ask someone who knows more than this old woman.
