Well now, if y’all ain’t heard of Lee Corso, let me tell you about him. He’s one of them folks that been around for a long time, so long it’s hard to remember a time when he wasn’t on TV. Born way back on August 7, 1935, Lee’s been around for 89 years, though he don’t look a day over 70. He’s what you might call a real veteran in the world of sports broadcasting, especially when it comes to football. Lee’s been a big part of ESPN’s College GameDay, the show where folks gather ‘round to talk about all them college football games. He’s been there since 1987, that’s what, 37 years now? Ain’t that somethin’?
Now, you might wonder, what’s so special about this man, Lee Corso? Well, let me tell you, he didn’t just pop up on TV for no reason. No, sir. He’s got a history in football. Played it, coached it, and talked about it on the radio and TV. Back in the day, Lee was the head coach at some college teams. He coached at the University of Louisville from 1969 to 1972, and before that, he was coaching at other places like Indiana and Northern Illinois. So, the man knows his football, that’s for sure.
But it ain’t just his coaching that makes Lee Corso so famous. It’s also his fun little antics on College GameDay. If you’ve ever seen the show, you know he’s famous for puttin’ on a mascot head at the end of every episode. He’ll pick a team, and if he’s feelin’ real wild, he’ll wear their mascot’s headgear, sometimes lookin’ like a fool, but always entertainin’ the folks watchin’ at home. You can’t help but laugh when you see it. And he’s been doin’ that for years, makin’ folks smile and scratch their heads at the same time.
But I’ll tell ya, time waits for no one, and even the best of ‘em gotta slow down eventually. As of August 2024, Lee’s been back for his 32nd season on College GameDay. That’s a mighty long time, don’t ya think? He’s been doin’ this since he was in his 50s, and now he’s well into his 80s. And even though folks like Nick Saban and Kirk Herbstreit have taken over some of the spotlight, Lee’s still holdin’ on, tryin’ his best to keep up. I’ll be honest with ya, sometimes it’s hard watchin’ him struggle a bit, but you know, we all love him for it. He’s a fighter, and he’s been fightin’ for college football fans for decades.
It ain’t all easy for Lee, though. As you get older, things start hurtin’ a bit more, and you can’t keep up like you used to. But Lee, well, he don’t let that stop him. He’s been married to his wife, Betsy, since 1957, and they got four kids and ten grandkids. Ain’t that somethin’ to be proud of? Family’s important, and Lee’s got a good one. And let me tell you, folks, there’s somethin’ about family that keeps you going when times get tough.
Now, back to Lee’s age. He’s 89, but if you watch him, you might think he’s a bit younger. He ain’t got the pep he used to, but he’s still got that spark in his eye. Some folks, they wonder how much longer Lee’s gonna keep doin’ the College GameDay thing. But you know what? I think he’ll keep at it as long as he can. After all, he’s spent most of his life around football, and there ain’t no way he’s lettin’ go of that just yet. You’ll see him out there pickin’ teams, wearin’ his funny hats, and doin’ what he loves.
And I reckon that’s all we can ask for, right? A man who’s done so much for college football, entertainin’ folks all across the country, still gettin’ out there and givin’ it his all. So, if you ever catch Lee Corso on the TV, maybe give him a little respect. He’s been in the game a long time, and at 89, he ain’t about to quit anytime soon.
