My Little Investigation
First, I Googled it. Just typed in “dejected expression nyt” and hit enter. I figured I would find an answer that I could work off of to start practicing.
- Lots of stuff about crosswords, articles with sad-looking people… you name it.
- I was looking for anything, really. Any angle to get my teeth into, so I did a little more searching.
Then I started hunting within the NYT website itself.
I scrolled through some opinion pieces. I figured “dejected” is kind of an opinion-y word, right?
I checked out the photos. Maybe there was a picture of someone looking super bummed out.

I poked around for a while. Nothing.
Then it hit me. I decided to go and try a different search tack and searched the NYT crossword puzzle clues and the answers to find my way to the right search path. Bingo!
Figuring It Out
I realized “dejected expression” was a clue. And I guessed the answer could be a bunch of different things.
So I tried a crossword solver website. I know, I know, it’s cheating, but I was curious! I typed in the clue, added how many letters I thought the answer was and crossed my fingers.
The website did all the complicated calculations for me, and I finally got the answer I was looking for. Success!
