Okay, so I’ve been trying to get better at crosswords lately, and I stumbled upon this phrase “came forth” in one of the clues. I was totally stumped for a bit. I mean, it sounds so formal and old-timey, right?

First, I tried to think of synonyms. I was like, “Okay, what does it really mean to ‘come forth’?” I thought of things like “appear,” “emerge,” “show up”… but nothing seemed to fit the crossword grid I was looking at. The clue was “Came forth (6)”
Then I started playing around with the letters I already had filled in. I think I had an ‘E’ and an ‘R’ somewhere in there. So I was trying different combinations, plugging in letters, seeing if anything made sense.
- I tried “showed” first, but it has the incorrect letters to fit.
- Then “sprang”, still did not work.
- I mumbled “issued”, it got me close.
After a few failed attempts, I decided to use one of the hints. So there it was the answer “issued”.
It was a good learning experience, I guess. I need to brush up on these older, less common ways of saying things!
