Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get into this book, “But Seriously” by John McEnroe. Yeah, the tennis guy. I heard about it a while back, it’s his second book after “You Cannot Be Serious”. I finally got around to picking it up and, man, it’s been a ride.
First off, I went to the local bookstore. Browsing the sports section, didn’t see it there. Asked one of the workers, and she helped me locate it. Found it tucked away in the biographies, which makes sense, I guess.
- Went to bookstore
- Checked sports section – nope
- Asked for help – found in biographies
Got the book, started reading it on the bus ride home. It’s a pretty easy read, to be honest. McEnroe’s got this way of writing that just feels like he’s talking to you, you know? Like you’re just chilling, having a beer with the guy.
He dives right into his life post-tennis. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows. This guy, a legend on the court, is dealing with some real stuff. He talks about trying to figure out who he is after tennis, being a dad, and even doing the whole broadcasting gig. It’s like, you see this whole other side of him that you never knew existed.
What I really like is how he just lays it all out there. His struggles, his doubts, it’s all in the book. He’s not trying to sugarcoat anything. You can tell he’s been through some ups and downs, and he’s sharing it all. Pretty brave, if you ask me.
- Read on the bus
- McEnroe’s style – like he’s talking to you
- Post-tennis life – not all easy
- Being a dad, broadcasting – new roles
I’m not even halfway through, but I can already tell this book is going to stick with me. There was this one part where he’s talking about his inner demons. You feel for the guy. It was not easy for him after becoming a champion, and he had to put great effort into getting used to normal life and becoming a father. It makes you think about how these famous people are just, well, people.
He also throws in some funny stories and his opinions on things, and let me tell you, the man’s got opinions. It’s entertaining, and it makes the book a lot more fun to read. I read a few reviews from others before, 955 of them. Pretty high ratings, and I can see why.
- Dealing with demons – relatable
- Funny stories and opinions – entertaining
- 955 reviews, high ratings – deserved
Wrapping Up
So yeah, that’s where I’m at with “But Seriously.” It’s a solid read so far. I’m going to keep at it, and maybe I’ll share more thoughts once I’m done. But for now, if you’re looking for something a bit different, a book that’s real and honest and a little bit funny, you might want to check it out. I got it after “You Cannot Be Serious” which is also good, and he is getting better at his writing for sure.
It is a good book to read, and from the reviews, I am sure you will enjoy it as well. It is the sports book of the year!
I highly recommend it.
Stay tuned.
