Well, let me tell you about them tennis fellas, Sampras and Agassi. Folks made a big fuss about ’em back in the day. Always yappin’ about their matches.
Sampras versus Agassi, that’s what they called it. Sounded like a dang wrestling match, not some fancy tennis game. But, these boys, they whacked that ball harder than anyone I ever seen. And they did it a lot, like, 34 times they played each other. From, what was it? 1989 all the way to 2002. That’s a long time to be hittin’ balls at each other, I tell ya.
Now, Sampras, he was somethin’ else. Folks said he was number one in the world for, get this, 286 weeks! That’s like, five years! Can you believe it? Five years sittin’ on top. He had this serve, like a bullet, they said. Boom! And that was that. Point over. Folks called him “Pistol Pete” on account of that fast serve. He was all business on the court, that Sampras.
- Sampras was number one for a long, long time.
- His serve was super fast.
- He was serious about his tennis.
Agassi, though, he was a different kind of cat. He liked to wear them bright, flashy clothes, you know? Like somethin’ you’d see at a carnival. And he had this long hair, all flowin’ in the wind. He hit the ball hard too, real hard. But he was more, I don’t know, showy-like. He liked to put on a show for the folks. He was number one too, but not for as long as Sampras. Only 101 weeks, they said. Still a long time, I guess, if you think about it.
They say these two were rivals. Like cats and dogs, I reckon. Always tryin’ to outdo each other. Sampras, he was all about winnin’, no matter what. Agassi, well, he wanted to win too, but he also wanted to look good doin’ it. They played each other in some big matches, real big. Grand Slam finals, they called ’em. Agassi, he got to three of them finals early on, but he couldn’t seem to win the big one. Lost to Sampras once, too, in the U.S. Open, I think it was in 1990. Poor fella must’ve been heartbroken.
Now, when it came to who won more, that Sampras fella, he come out on top. They say he beat Agassi 20 times out of them 34 matches. Twenty to fourteen. That’s a pretty good record, I’d say. So, Sampras, he had the edge, you see. But Agassi, he gave him a run for his money, that’s for sure. Folks loved watchin’ ’em play. Said it was excitin’, somethin’ special. I guess it was, considerin’ how much they still talk about it.
They had different ways of playin’, these boys. Sampras, like I said, he was all about attackin’. Boom, boom, boom! Get to the net, volley that ball, point over. Agassi, he was more, patient-like, maybe? He’d stay at the baseline and hit them balls back and forth, waitin’ for his chance. Two different ways to skin a cat, as they say. But both of ’em were good, real good. Some of the best there ever was, I hear.
They played against other fellas too, of course. Guys like Courier and Becker and Rafter. But it was always Sampras and Agassi that got the most attention. They was the main event, you know? The headliners. Like them singers they have on the TV, always singin’ at the end of a show.
So, yeah, Sampras versus Agassi. A big deal back then. Two fellas hittin’ a ball back and forth, and folks goin’ wild over it. It’s funny what people get excited about, ain’t it? But I guess it was somethin’ special, seein’ two of the best goin’ at it like that. Twenty to fourteen, that’s what they say the final count was. Sampras got the better of Agassi, but they both gave us a good show.
Anyway, that’s what I remember hearin’ about them two tennis players. A lot of hoopla, if you ask me. But they sure could hit that little ball, I’ll give ‘em that.
