Okay, so I’ve been wanting to mess around with McIlroy’s swing at Pebble Beach, specifically in a golf simulator, for a while now. Here’s how I finally got around to it and what I did.

Getting Started
First, I needed the right setup. I’ve got a home golf simulator – nothing too fancy, but it does the job. It uses a projector, impact screen, and some software that lets you play virtual courses. The key was finding a good quality simulation of Pebble Beach that also had decent player models.
I searched around a bit, and ended up going with a software package. Many software had a pretty good version of Pebble Beach, and its player options let you, you know, adjust things a little bit.
The Process
Once I had the software loaded up, I jumped into the practice range at Pebble Beach. I selected a generic golfer model that had a swing that was not that bad, It was pretty simple looking, similar to Rory’s.
- Warming Up: I didn’t go straight to trying to copy Rory. First, I just hit some balls with my normal swing, getting a feel for the simulator and how it was reading my shots.
- Observing Rory: Then, I pulled up some slow-motion videos of McIlroy’s swing, specifically at Pebble Beach. I was looking at his posture, his takeaway, how he transitioned at the top, and his follow-through. I watched those videos a bunch of times.
- Trying to Copy It: This is where it got tricky! I started trying to mimic his stance, I felt very strange. Then I tried to copy his swing, bit by bit. I’d take a swing, look at the simulator replay, and compare it to the videos of Rory.
- Making Adjustments: I would see where I was different. Like, maybe my backswing was too flat, or I wasn’t rotating my hips enough. Then I’d try again, focusing on that one thing. I do some practice to try to find the feeling.
- Repeat, Repeat, Repeat: I just kept doing this. Swing, compare, adjust, repeat. It took a while, and honestly, it was pretty frustrating at times. My shots were all over the place at first!
The Result (So Far)
I’m definitely not hitting it like Rory yet, not even close. But, I can see some improvements. My swing feels a little more fluid, and I’m starting to get a bit more distance. I also noticed I’m hitting the ball a little straighter, which is always a bonus!
The main thing is, it was a fun experiment. It’s cool to see how much work goes into a swing like McIlroy’s, and it gives you a new appreciation for the pros. I plan to keep messing around with this – it’s a good way to practice and, you know, pretend I’m playing Pebble Beach even when I’m stuck at home.
